The Year 6 jumpers have arrived!
Considerable research emphasises the importance of rites of passage for children. I believe that we should look for opportunities to acknowledge and celebrate important milestones for students as part of our commitment to Student Agency. One such moment is the arrival of the Year 6 jumpers. It is clear to see the pride our St Gabriel’s take in wearing their jumper but more than this we have been speaking about how as Year 6’s they have a responsibility as leaders and to care for younger students. I asked four Year 6 students to share how they felt, and I am delighted to share their reflections below:
“This jumper is the mark of my anniversary and achievement. It represents that I am no kid. I am a leader, a person of status and responsibility. It is now my job to lead and help the little kids, as a good leader and a responsible leader.” -Martin
“The jumper feels like an achievement to me and gives me responsibility to be a good role model to all the younger children” -Mika
“You know school is kind of like a video game. You start your journey learning the basics of the game and earning this jumper is like achieving the final reward - beating the game…you feel happy, but you don’t know if your adventure is finished. Or is it?” -Kelvin
“This jumper is like an achievement of all the things I have done over the years, and it symbolizes leadership and growth.” -Madi
National Simultaneous Storytime 2024 was held at St Gabriel’s on Wednesday 22nd May. It is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, preschools, family day care, family homes and many other places around the country. Celebrating its 24th year, it aims to promote the value of reading and literacy.
The picture book chosen for 2024 is Bowerbird Blues by award winning illustrator, writer and designer Aura Parker.

WAY TO GO Road Safety and Education Program
St Gabriel’s School is working in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) to deliver a Road Safety Program to our Students and improve road safety in the area. Other outcomes include improving student wellbeing and fitness.
Part of the program includes obtaining data from students, parents and teachers about road use and road safety matters,
Below is a link to an online survey for parents that is anonymous and will assist DIT in preparing the most suitable program for our community.

Religious Dimensions
Vinnies Winter Appeal
There are many ways we can respond to the needs of others. St Vincent DePaul society works to minister to the seven works of corporal mercy.
The works of Corporal Mercy include:
To feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to give shelter to travellers, to visit the sick, to visit the imprisoned.
The Vinnies Winter Appeal invites us to act like Jesus and to help all people who are made in God’s image. When we help others, we help Christ. We live out our mission to love others and to love God.
Next Friday 7th June is the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This would be an ideal time to support Vinnies by donating non-perishable food items, warm clothes that are no longer needed but still in good conditions or toiletries.
Any donations are most welcome.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus was the inspiration for Fr Jules Chevalier to begin an order of religious me called the Missionaries of God’s Love. Chevalier then recruited the help of Marie Louise Hartzer to begin an order of women called the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
The Daughters founded our school and this important link make the celebration on the 7th June most significant for our school.
Our school will participate in activities with students from OLSH college before celebrating Mass in the Sacred Heart Centre (the Gym) at 11.30 am.
Parents are most welcome to attend this Mass.
There is much symbolism in the Sacred Heart Iconography.
The heart represents Jesus’ loving heart, pierced by the sins of Humanity but still beating for all people.
The flame represents the burning fire of God’s love for us.
The crown of thorns, circling the heart represents Christ’s suffering that he willingly accepted to show his ultimate love for us.
The Cross is the ultimate symbol of Christ’s self giving love. It represents suffering but also triumph.
Combined, these symbols reveal God’s love for all humanity and what we can enjoy be being followers of Christ.
Sundays Gospel Reading
The reading for this Sunday which celebrates the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Mark 14:12-16, 22-26
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said to Jesus, ‘Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the passover?’ So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him, and say to the owner of the house which he enters, “The Master says: Where is my dining room in which I can eat the passover with my disciples?” He will show you a large upper room furnished with couches, all prepared. Make the preparations for us there.’ The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and prepared the Passover.
And as they were eating he took some bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to them. ‘Take it,’ he said ‘this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had returned thanks he gave it to them, and all drank from it, and he said to them, ‘This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many. I tell you solemnly, I shall not drink any more wine until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God.’
After psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.

Our Year 6 students have been working hard under the guidance of James Meston (CEO) to develop and publish their Podcasts. Students have worked with support to refine their scripts and create engaging and sometimes hilarious radio segments. Keep an eye on the ARCH D Radio Spotify in the coming weeks to tune in to our students’ fantastic broadcasts.
On Friday next week three selected students will travel to the Catholic Education Office to represent our schools and network with other students that are excelling in the world of Podcasting.

Our members are trying to keep the garden in good shape and keep the yard looking tidy.
New plants have gone in the Nature Playground.
We are asking all children to keep their rubbish in the correct bin and help with recycling.
All children will help at some point with soup making for Sr Janet Mead’s Day Centre for Homeless persons. When it is your child’s turn, they will receive a letter to take home with suggested ingredients for families to donate. If you can help that will be useful.
The Community Group will be hosting a free movie night! They will be screening Sonic the Hedgehod.
Please come along and join the fun. There will be popcorn and other snacks to be purchased by cash on the night.
