Issue #7
As we have moved to a new system with traffic management on Barrington Ave and the OSHC gate, I have repeated the information from earlier in the week for you below:
Traffic Safety and Your Child
We have been working with the Port Adelaide and Enfield Council to assess the safest way for children and most efficient way for parents to manage the kiss-and-drop on Barrington Ave. Given the small number of children who catch the bus, the Council have agreed with our request to move the bus zone to enable cars to use the preferred space directly out the front of the school. The signs below have now been installed on the school side/northern side of Barrington Avenue:
No Parking (Kiss and Drop Zone)
For safety please:
- Remain in your vehicle
- 2 minutes maximum parking time
- Move forward to the start of the line and follow cars in sequence
- Please be courteous to other drivers
- If you need to come into school to collect your child, then please consider parking in an alternative area.
A reminder about the No Standing signs on the southern side of Barrington Avenue that have been in place for some time.
Please see below:
NB. Please don’t park on the southern side of Barrington Avenue and ask your child to cross the road.
New OSHC Gate
With the completion of the building works, I have been concerned about the safety of students in OSHC. We have been leaving the front gate open from early in the morning and in the evening and with the darker months approaching, it is important for us to have a safer system. We have installed a key code for parents whose children are in OSHC to use to drop off and collect their children (see picture below). The OSHC Director has shared this information with students who attend OSHC.
Please note, close the gate behind you and do not share the code with the children.
If you have any concers, please see me.
ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day is an important day in the Australian calendar. It is a day we honour and give thanks to all the men and women who have defended our country and worked for peace in other parts of the world. Some of these men and women never returned to their families. They offered something called a supreme sacrifice. They had their lives cut short in defence of freedom and the preservation of the way of life we enjoy in Australia. This is what we remember in an effort to never let it happen again.
On Tuesday the St Gabriel’s community commemorated ANZAC Day. We were careful to make the distinction with the children about a celebration and a commemoration. The sacrifices made are not to be celebrated because we don’t ever want these sorts of events to happen again. Unlike a birthday celebration which is something we enjoy and do so every year.
A commemoration helps us understand what has happened in the past and keeps us on guard to ensure we do our best to try and prevent conflict at all costs.
The words we hear in an ANZAC Day commemoration are ‘Lest We Forget’ , which simply means ‘don’t ever let us forget and become complacent and foolish enough for conflict, anger and hatred be the way we choose’.
We were privileged to have Chief Petty Officer Matthew Mendes attend our commemoration service. Chief Petty Officer Mendes spoke to the children about what it is he does in the navy and the challenges on families with a parent being away on duty. He then recited the Ode of Remembrance before we observed a minute’s silence. We are grateful for Chief Petty Officer Mendes’ time and presence.
The children in their classes prepared wreaths which they placed during the ceremony which was done with respect and dignity.
It was a reverent and significant event for our community which we were pleased to present.
Moore Street Centre
Each year St Gabriel’s students help people ‘doing it tough’ by making soup for the homeless and people down on their luck. This programme will begin again this term. You will be notified in the week prior when your child will be participating in soup making.
The children will be involved in peeling and chopping vegetables and cleaning up after the work is done. No children will go near hot water or surfaces for safely reasons and will be given clear safety instructions when using peelers and chopping knives.
The soup will be delivered to Sister Janet Mead’s Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless Persons Inc. They are also known as the Moore Street Centre.
Any donations of chicken or vegetable stock, or cans of chickpeas will be most welcome. These can be delivered any time during school hours to the office.
As the winter months approach, the centre is also in need of warm winter items to help their clients.
CAN YOU HELP?
Donations of the following items are being sought by the Moore Street Centre:
- Blankets
- Rain coats
- Warm jumpers
- Woollen Scarves
- Warms socks

Any donations will be most welcome and can be brought to the office.
We are pleased to have the new library up and running at the beginning of the year! The students have enjoyed using the space for quiet reading, borrowing with their class and a shared book with their teachers. At recess time, the students are welcome into the space where they spend time drawing, reading and borrowing books with their friends. The new space also gives the Year 6's students opportunity to sit down and catch up on their work. There are also extra room used as break out spaces.
Two students from each class has been allocated as Library Monitors for semester 1.
The role of a library monitor includes responsibilities such as :
- Assisting teachers to borrow /return books for the class library
- Supporting recess time library activities
- Returning books in the library
- Assisting to create library displays
- Recommending and reviewing books
- Planning book themed special days and events
Families are welcome to come along to borrow books with their children. Here is the flyer for more information:
