Issue #2
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Learning
We have now settled into the routines of the day and I have been delighted to see the excellent learning taking place in our classroom.
Community
Thank you to the parents and caregivers for making me feel welcome with particluar thanks to the community group for their help in cleaning and tidying parts of the school last week. It was appreciated and I am grateful for the great sense of community support that we have at St Gabriel’s.
Child Saftey
- A reminder that before school supervision commences at 8:20AM each day and concludes at 3:20PM. To ensure your child’s safety you are asked to drop off and collect your children. A reminder that we have an excellent OSHC service available (https://sgs.catholic.edu.au/our-community/oshc) before and after school.
- As educators, we discuss with students the important issues about their use of Information and Communication Technologies, and the importance of keeping safe online. We often invite a member of SAPOL to come and address the students to reinforce the safety and legal aspects of online behaviour.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
On Tuesday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday at St Gabriel’s. A day when followers of the Christian faith traditionally eat up the ‘luxury’ foods in our homes to prepare for a time of living simply. We are all called to live simply so others can have their fair share.
Living simply reminds us that others have greater needs than us and we are reminded that God provides all we need. We are also reminded we can all play our part to support our brothers and sister who need a helping hand.
It seems a little strange at times to think of milk, eggs, and flour as luxury foods, but today it is symbolic of our preparation to come closer to God.
Ash Wednesday
Yesterday, the school commemorated Ash Wednesday. This is the first day of Lent and we prayed and thought of ways we can come closer to God over the next six weeks before Easter. Lent is a time of reflection to examine our lives and ask if we are living in a way that would please God. People of all religions can ask themselves this question and work towards examining their lives.
At the Liturgy we also launched Project Compassion which is a Lenten program run by Caritas Australia to support communities overseas and in Australia. Each child brought home a Project Compassion Box and are encouraged to donate to Caritas Australia to bring hope and healing to communities around the world.
The work of Caritas Australia through Project Compassion tries to address the Common Good in communities by providing Education, employment and clean drinking water.
Each child is invited to participate in this fundraising through the Project Compassion Boxes which they have brought home or are found in the classroom.

We now have the Earth Care Squad for Semester 1! The children will receive their badges at our assembly and they are excited about this.
Yesterday, the Earth Care Squad spent some time in the garden clearing it for our new year plantings. We made great progress yesterday but there is more clearing to do.
We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new chickens which will be here any day now.
A huge thank you to the City of Port Adelaide Enfield for supporting our Playgroup with a $2,000 grant for equipment. We have purchased some Montessori and natural play items for our Playgroup families to enjoy. St Gabriel’s School community really appreciated your support!
